To celebrate my blog turning 4, and to share the love this holiday season, I am doing a special book give away, but this one is for the kids. Recently, at the Ake Arts and Book Festival I was happy to see there was a nice selection of children's literature at the bookstore.

Well, I came back from the Festival with those 14 gorgeous books in the photo below - some purchases others gifted. To celebrate turning 4 I'm giving one lucky reader two new books to add to their library. The giveaway is only for this weekend, and closes Sunday 20 December, 12 noon (GMT). The winner will be announced shortly after.

Which 2 of these Ake goodies could be yours?

So grown-ups, if you would like 2 new books for yourself or for your son, daughter, niece, nephew, younger cousin, or any other little human out there -  and if you currently follow/subscribe to this blog or like the Facebook page, here's all you need to do:

1. Take a look at the photo above of my mini-Ake book haul;
2. Which 2 children's books in the picture will I be giving away;
3. Let me know - leave a comment on the blog (sorry, anonymous comments will not be considered) or on the Facebook update for this particular post stating the 2 books.
4. That's all!!!

There is one requirement: I will be using good ol' Royal Mail to deliver the books to the winner, and so the only requirement is that there is a postal address or PO Box the books can be posted to. Good luck!!!

As promised, today I announce the winner of the 'I've Got Two Copies' Book Giveaway. Thank you for entering either via facebook or the blog. I always get super nervous when I do book giveaways that no one will enter so I'm happy I had some entries for this book.

I am also happy to announce that after cutting, writing, crumbling, tossing in a hat, shaking it up and getting someone other than myself - my mother lovingly helped to pull the name out of the hat (thank you :)), that the winner of the 'I've Got Two Copies' Book Giveaway is Nard who enterred via the blog.

Congratulations!!!! Please send an email to bookshy@gmail.com with a delivery address and Broken Monsters will be on its way to its new home. I hope you enjoy it!!!!

I did promise it was a good one. So I've got two copies of Lauren Beukes' latest novel Broken Monsters and wanted to share the love by doing a book giveaway. This is my little way of saying thank you for supporting this blog.

I'll be giving one of my copies away to one lucky winner. I haven't had a chance to read it yet, but the synopsis can be found here. The rules are simple:

This giveaway is open only to those who like bookshy's Facebook page or currently follow this blog. So if you already do and would like a chance to win a copy of this new release, all you need to do is either like the post on the Facebook page associated with the giveaway OR leave a comment below (sorry, but anonymous comments will not be considered). There isn't really a country or continent restriction, but the only requirement is that there is a postal address or PO Box in which the book can be posted to - as I will be using good ol' Royal Mail to deliver the book to the winner. The giveaway is open until Sunday August 31st. The winner will be announced on Monday September 1st via the Facebook page.

PS. I am old school and yes, I know that there are random generator apps out there that would make my life so much easier, but I am going to put names, or numbers associated with names (not quite sure yet what strategy I will use yet), in a hat and get someone (other than myself) to pick a winner.

So, I've got two copies of the same book. As a result, the 'I've Got Two Copies' book giveaway is back. Will be posting details soon. And I promise it's a good one.

As I mentioned last week on Facebook, I found out a week or so ago I had two copies of two new releases. I was not sure what to do with them, until my younger sister suggested I do a giveaway. So a big thank you to my sister for that great idea. The books on offer are Love is Power or Something Like That by A Igoni Barrett and We Need New Names by NoViolet Bulawayo. My review on Love is Power can be found here. I haven't had a chance to read We Need New Names yet, but a synopsis can be found here.

The giveaway is open only to followers of the blog or anyone who has liked the Facebook Page. So for a chance to win one of these two new releases all you need to do is:
Leave a comment either on this post OR on the Facebook update for this post saying either "Love is Power" or "We Need New Names" for the book you would prefer. You can also simply just like the Facebook update.
The giveaway is open until July 14th. The winner will be announced on July 15th.

Today marks exactly one year I got the courage to start blogging about my love for reading and African literature. I had absolutely no idea what I was doing when I first started and I was extremely nervous about even starting bookshy, after putting it off for nearly a year. Thankfully, with (A LOT) of encouragement I finally got the courage to set up the blog, and post my first review. Writing this post today, I can't believe it's been a year - it's gone by so quickly. I've learnt a lot about African literature, blogging, and even myself. Honestly, so many great things have also happened as a result.

I just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone that follows, or subscribes to, the blog, who has liked my facebook page and who follows me on Twitter and tumblr. Thank you for stopping by everytime you do and reading these words, as well as commenting and sharing. Thank you also to the publishers and authors who have gotten in touch, and asked me to review their books, as well as to the fellow booklovers and bloggers I have met this past year. And I can't say enough thank you's to the authors out there for fuelling my love for African literature, and making this whole experience even better.

I thought long and hard about what I would do to celebrate, and in the end I decided the best way to celebrate (and say thank you) was through a book giveaway. After deciding to do a giveaway, I thought long and hard again about what books I would give away and what rules and criteria I would use to choose these books. In the end, the first rule was they all had to be books that I had personally bought and the second rule was that they had to have been reviewed on the blog. After that the criteria was:

1. A debut novel/collection: The Spider King's Daughter OR Tropical Fish

2. A book that I absolutely loved (so one that I gave 5 out of 5 stars) -  What the Day Owes the Night OR Night Dancer

3. A book that I realised after reviewing is not available outside of Nigeria- The Phoenix OR Every Day is for The Thief

To celebrate one year of bookshy, I'm giving away one pre-loved book from each category to three people somewhere out there.  I've listed two books in each category (as I couldn't decide which book to add) so whoever wins in each category gets to decide which one of the two they'd like. I really hope that makes sense, but if you are one of the lucky three to win, in helping you decide, links to the reviews of each book are provided above. There are no rules to this giveaway. If you already subscribe to the blog or like my facebook page, you are automatically entered. If you don't, you can either subscribe, like my facebook page, or just leave a comment here and you'll be added to the giveaway.

I can't say enough how much I have truly enjoyed this year and how I truly appreciate the support I get. So thank you again for reading, commenting, sharing, and more. Regarding the giveaway, I've enjoyed reading all of them, and absolutely loved quite a few of them, so I do hope whoever out there gets them enjoys reading each book as much as I did.

I can't wait to kick off the next year and hope I can continue to share my honest opinion on African literature and the books I love, books I've read, and books that I'm dying to read.

About me

Founded in 2011, bookshy represents two things: the young me who was so shy I escaped through books, and the older me whose shelf is always one book shy of being full.

bookshy is a space where I celebrate, promote and recognise contemporary African literature - although sometimes I go back in time to commemorate the greats. It is about the books I love, the books I have read and the books that I am dying to read.
