When Life Takes Over: Sorry for the Silence

I haven't done a confessional post in a while. Although this is less a confessional post, and more an apology for my silence over the past few weeks. This is due to me being at what is called the "End Game" of a long and arduous process, also known as the PhD, which I began almost four years ago. I won't bore you with details of my research, but I am very happy to say that I am coming to the end of it. However, finishing it demands seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks and months of commitment, which in turn requires tough decisions and sacrifices.

I will still be blogging and posting, but it won't be as regular as I would like it to be. This is where I ask for patience (and prayers, for those out there who pray), as in exactly 20 weeks (yes, I have been counting), I can say goodbye to the thesis (minus oral defense) and hello to whatever the world has for me on the other side of my thesis.

  1. Good for you. Remembering my own experience finishing my Ph.D., I am impressed that you ever find time and energy to read and write "for fun." Good luck in wrapping it up and finding a good job afterward, which in my case was even harder.
    What are you writing about?

    1. Honestly, whenever I didn't feel like working on my thesis, blogging was a nice escape from it. And thanks a lot! It took me a while to get my head round the final stretch, but I've gotten into it now. Also this academic session is coming to an end, teaching and other commitments are slowly going away so I can focus solely on my thesis ... and then the hard and scary bit once I'm done - finding a good job.

I'm writing on the experiences of domestic workers (cleaners, carers, drivers etc) in private homes in Lagos.

  3. So, how’s the thesis writing going? Well, it is really a tedious process and need focus and concentration, but it should also be fun. Just know how to manage your time so that you can balance work and play when you’re doing your master graduate thesis. Anyway, I wish you all the luck you need, and also the determinations to go thru till the end of it. Good luck!

    1. Thank you for your kind words. Slow and steady and slightly frustrating sometimes, but as you said it's also fun in some bits. It is trying to find that balance between working hard (but not to the point of a breakdown), and taking a break (but not to the point of feeling guilty).

  4. It's good to know that you have been serious about your thesis writing though you have to give up some of the exciting activities you used to doing just to come up with good thesis ideas and eventually head its completion. I am pretty sure that you've done well in your oral defense since you devoted a lot of time with your task.
