'A good book - if it has the right message in it -  it can change a whole human being into something he never thought he would be'. Those are the words of Miriam Tlali in an interview she did in 2014, as part of Adrian Stern's 21 icons of South Africa project - a visual celebration of 21st century South African icons.

Tlali wrote her first novel in 1969. It was eventually published in 1975 as Muriel at Metropolitan - making Tlali the first black woman in South Africa to publish a novel. Although it almost was never published as revealed in an interview she did with Human Rights Watch: 
My mother used to carry a copy of the manuscript around, wrapped in a cloth. There were quite a number [of publishers] whom I tried and they all turned it down. Finally, the system gradually changed, and in 1974 somebody told me about Raven Press. However, they changed the title to 'Muriel at Metropolitan' and took out words and whole passages. They said it would be banned otherwise and they would not be making any money off it. 
I refused for a year to give my permission to publish. 'Not under that title,' I said. But my mother started complaining : 'I am getting old and I shall die without seeing your book. Let them publish it.' And so it was published [and almost immediately banned].

It also took so long for Muriel at Metropolitan to be published, largely because it was very critical of the apartheid state, as Tlali explains 'Most would read it and return it to me and say, "Sorry, we can't publish this."'

Muriel at Metropolitan, a semi-autobiographical work that drew from Tlali's experience as a bookkeeper in a furniture shop, was banned in 1979 by the Apartheid government. However, it was published internationally as Between Two Worlds by Longman African Classics in 1979. Tlali's next book, Amandla, published in 1980, was also banned weeks after it was published. It was based on the 1976 Soweto uprising when young people in the township 'rose up against the decision to make Afrikaans compulsory as a medium of instruction in black schools'. Similar to Muriel, it gained international recognition and was translated into several languages, including Japanese, Polish, German and Dutch. In 1984, she wrote a collection of short stories, interviews and non-fiction, Mihloti. Both Muriel and Amandla were unbanned in 1986. In 1989, Footprints in the Quag (named Soweto Stories by Pandora Press) was published.


A look at Miriam Tlali's publications 

Yet, Mariam Tlali never thought she would become a writer, as indicated in her 21 icons feature. Born in Doornfontein in Johannesburg in 1933, Tlali grew up in Sophiatown - a legendary black community in Johannesburg in which, under apartheid, black residents were forcibly removed and the area then demolished. Tlali studied at the University of Witwatersand until it was closed to Black students during apartheid. She later went to the National University of Lesotho, but eventually had to leave due to lack of funds. Tlali eventually took up a job as a bookkeeper at a furniture store. It was this job, and the experiences at it that inspired her first novel, as she explains in her interview for 21 icons:
You know, while I was still working there, I grew to become very unhappy and restless ... Every Sunday, we would take our children to the freedom square to listen to our leaders speaking. People like Oliver Tambo, like Nelson Mandela. So I was very restless because I found that I was doing the kind of work which is done by people who are busy stalking Africans ... [so] I decided to leave my work.
It was this 'restlessness'  that fed into Muriel, as well as 'the things I learned about the kind of life that we had to lead, our poverty, everything about us. I wrote that.'  Knowing how critical the book was, Tlali clearly wasn't surprised when it was banned four years later:
I knew it was speaking against the system. against what I saw happening ... I knew it wouldn't be accepted. But I didn't really mind about that. At least I had vented out all that was hurting me inside.'
Miriam Tlali also co-founded Staffrider - one of South Africa's most important literary magazines in the 1970s and 1980s - and wrote a regular column 'Soweto Speaking'. Here's a look at Volume 3, Issue 2 of Staffrider published in June 1980, which included an excerpt from Amandla. Tlali also founded Skotaville in 1982 - the first black-owned publishing house in South Africa. Of course, Miriam Tlali had many other achievements, as noted in 21 icons: 
In 2001, she was officially recognised as the first African woman to publish a novel in South Africa by  the Department of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology. In 2005, they again honoured Tlali as a recipient of their Literary Lifetime Achievment Award. Three years later, she was awarded the Presidential Award for her immense contribution to South African Literature ... As a member of the Women's National Coalition, Tlali slo assisted in the drafting of the Preamble to the South African Women's Charter.

Once in a while, a novel comes that defies categorisation - that's Nikhil Singh's debut novel Taty Went West. It has been described by Lauren Beukes as 'a hallucinogenic post-apocalyptic carnival ride'. When I first read it I felt like it was Alice in Wonderland on crack, but to be honest it's more like Alice in Wonderland on what seems like never-ending crack. Told in 4-parts, Taty Went West is an absolutely terrifying and thrilling read. 


It follows Taty who runs away from her home in the suburbs of the Lowlands Into the Outzone to escape from something terrible she has done. Taty is around fifteen/sixteen at the beginning of the story. Once in the Outzone she is captured by Miss Muppet, and taken to the malicious imp, Alphonse Guava's, lair where she meets a number of interesting characters including Number Nun (a robotic, sex slave nun), the zombie Typhoid Mary, The Sugar Twins - a pair of 'Detachable Siamese', and the overweight Michelle 'nailed to a large wooden cross'. 

The fact is the world and characters Singh has created is completely bonkers, and you can only wonder what goes on in that beautiful mind of Singh's to create it. Also, there are a lot of characters in this novel - some of which I have named already, and there are more, and also many settings. Surprisingly it wasn't too confusing, but more than that Singh was able to make every character and very setting quite distinct.  

Now Alphonse the imp is the Oga of the Soft House - a sort of twisted brothel - and Taty, having been captured by Miss Muppet, will come in handy for Alphonse who wants her to work for him, particularly because Taty is special:
' ... these sno-globes were something like our emotions sensations and mental emanations rendered invisible' and Taty was 'not just any sno-globe.' 
'See, when most people are receptors, you are, in fact, a transmitter...' 
'You can be tuned to create specific sensations and emotions within people - just the sight of you playing tennis in the right skirt, if amplified correctly, could be enough to kill a person'. p38
You see Alphonse was in the business of pleasure, and young Taty had something that would take his customer's pleasure to another level. 

While all this is going on and Taty was settling into her new life, in another dimension - at the Clock Shop - Dr.Dali had found something sinister for a rival of Alphonse, Mister Sister. Dr. Dali had an 'inter-dimensional Venus Flytrap' that enabled him to capture foreign specimens - and what he had found, the Symbiote, was really going to take the pleasure game to a whole 'nother level. 

Now I said Singh created beautiful characters in his world, well here's a glimpse:
A figure crawled and crept like a gecko along the outer walls of the lifeguard station. It resembled a lanky teenage boy, except that it was possessed of slick, green skin, similar to that of a tree frog. The amphibious resemblance did not end there. The arms and legs of the being were double-, if not triple-jointed and possessed of a rubbery flexibility. An extra elbow and knee joint lent the legs and arms a vague 'z' shape when they flexed. When the creature stopped moving, these limbs folded up like wet origami and it assumed a sickening sort of yogic position, not unlike that of a grasshopper. Another dramatic feature of the thing were its long antennae, which quivered in spasms upon its head. The antennae themselves were gigantic and feathery, like a moth's, fluttering spastically against surfaces. The eyes of the symbiote were disproportionate, bulbous and reflective, Nictitating membranes licked across their surfaces while complex sets of mandibles operated below. Someone had dressed the thing in loud, neon surf shorts, whether for a joke or modesty it was hard to tell. (p85)
I mean really Singh has a way of making you feel like you are right there. I really can picture that symbiote in its loud, neon surf short.  

Now with the discovery of the symbiotes, let's just say that Taty running away from home and being kidnapped by Miss Muppet and becoming a pleasure transmitter for Alphonse Guava is not the worst thing that happens to her - or, for that matter, the other characters in this books. You see, the symbiotes are special - it 'can evoke a sensual bliss unparalleled on this plane', and 'also deliver a state of almost perpetual orgasm' (p. 86). And so I ask you, dear reader - what would you give and do for a state of almost perpetual orgasm? 

Taty Went West definitely takes you on a journey along with Taty - who is quite an interesting character. She's not really a damsel in distress - even with all the things she experiences. She is also quite aware of the decisions she makes, and it seems that in spite of all that happens to her once she's in the Outzone she doesn't regret her decision to leave the Lowlands. I was also amazed by her bravery, and hurt by the amount of abuse and sexual violence she experienced once in the Outzone and beyond. Yes, this book makes it clear that the Outzone might be a place that gives you freedom, but that could come at a price, especially with regards to your body. I should also add that every character in this novel is flawed - some more than others; and some (read Alphonse) even quite a bit more selfish than you can imagine. Then again someone like him never painted himself as an angel.

In all this, I am yet to mention the absolutely stunning illustrations, which add another layer to this novel. And don't be fooled! I said at the beginning that Taty Went West defies categorisation. Well, just because the heroine is a teenage girl doesn't make this a YA novel. Similarly, just because there are illustrations doesn't make this a graphic novel. Taty Went West in the general sense is a Sci-Fi and Fantasy novel - although I read it as more Fantasy (a very trippy one), but  to be honest, what Taty Went West really is, is a novel that each reader needs to decipher for themselves. Regardless, it is one that must be read and every word and illustration savoured.

Indeed, while it isn't a short book - there are 408 pages - I read it in one day because I couldn't put it down. I was fascinated, intrigued and terrified by this world Nikhil Singh had envisioned. Taty Went West is an absolutely stunning debut and I can honestly say I didn't expect what I read. This is certainly not your average teenage girl on an adventure story. It's dark, it's twisted, it's morbid, it's painful, it's heart-wrenching, and I loved it - every single bit of it.

Back in March of 2014, I delved into the world of a crazed gynaecologist and a psychologist trying to bring him down. The novel was Dark Whispers, a psychological thriller, and it was my first introduction to the work of South African author Joanne Macgregor. Recently, I had the pleasure of reading Joanne Macgregor's new novel, Scarred - a YA novel set in the United States and I am just going to come right out and say Scarred was an absolute pleasure to read. Also, Joanne Macgregor has a way of drawing you in from the first page with her writing (I felt the exact same way with Dark Whispers) - she made me want to find out more. 

Scarred tells the story of Sloane Munster who used to be THAT teen - popular, great athlete (a champion swimmer) and gorgeous. Until a tragic accident which greatly affects her. All that was BS (before scar). Now AS (after scar), in addition to many pills and regular visits to her psychologist, Sloane is also obsessed with tragic accidents. She follows the news about them regularly to make her self feel somewhat better about her situation - it could have been worse. Now starting her senior year in a new school, Sloane is prepared for the worst - stares, teasing and bullying from the other kids. As the accident, well, left her scarred.

Scarred is as much about physical scarring - Sloane was severely injured in the accident leading to critical damage not only internally, but also a scar on her face which makes her extremely self conscious so she tries to hide behind tons of make-up and her hair - as it is about emotional scarring. Unable to swim again (competitively) and dealing with the consequences of the accident, Scarred reveals the scars we cannot see, which usually causes us even more pain. 

Scarred is also about love, but not the gooey teen romance, but a quite mature love that requires forgiveness. This is where Luke Naughton comes in - super hottie swimmer who Sloane had a serious crush on before the accident (when she was still swimming competitively in her other school). Now in the same school, Sloane cannot believe her luck. That is until Luke - who she thought might be different - gives her this look of disdain when she first walks into class on her first day of school (vain much, Luke. Here, I was rooting for you). Looks, however, can be deceiving, and one of the ways in which Scarred works is that we are not left to wonder only from Sloane's perspective what that look could mean. This is because with time we learn that Scarred is also told from Luke's perspective. Luke himself is actually more complex than you would imagine and is not just another pretty boy (he volunteers at an animal shelter for one). 

While Sloane is clearly the main character and we hear more of her; plus understandably, the accident has preoccupied Sloane's entire being (both physically and emotionally) since it happened. Yet, from Luke's perspective we learn that scars can run deep, and that more than one person has been scarred in this novel. Finding love, when you think you can no longer find it because physically you don't find yourself attractive or worthy emotionally is one thing. Finding love in the most unexpected place, or to be more precise with the most unexpected person, is a whole 'nother battle. Joanne Macgregor reveals the complexity of teen love and the maturity in both Sloane and Luke, especially based on the history their potential relationship is based on. As young as they are (seventeen/eighteen), these two characters showcase a level of maturity people 10, 20, 30 years their age may not necessarily have.

Another thing about Scarred is that it manages to reveal scarring in other characters in the novel - from Luke's family to another character, L.J - who like Sloane is the subject of school bullying. While Sloane is a very brave and confident girl (although she herself does not believe she is) and can handle the teasing and bullying, L.J clearly cannot. Kids really can be cruel and he reveals in a quite scary manner the impact bullying can have on young people, especially if they do not have enough support at home.

I may have started off reading Scarred thinking it was about the pain of Sloane, but the more I read, the more I realised we are all in pain in one way or the other - Sloane's was just more obvious and sometimes the visible scars are better as you cannot run or hide from it. It is the invisible ones that if left to fester can lead to some unintended negative consequences. Joanne Macgregor has written another beautiful novel, and while it is YA and readers of contemporary YA would enjoy this, I think its message cuts across ages and older readers could certainly relate to it.

Screenwriter and novelist, Sarah Lotz's 'hilarious, heartbreaking first novel', Pompidou Posse, published first in South Africa in 2008 by Penguin Books SA will now be available 'to a world-wide audience, newly edited and with an all new cover' thanks to Hodder & Stoughton. 
Scheduled to be published next month, here is a synopsis: 

Paris is eternal. Art is love. Friendship is forever. Except when it isn't.

You're seventeen. One night, more or less by accident, you set fire to a garden shed. Naturally, you pack up and run off to Paris, certain you can make enough money off your art to get by. You're young, you're talented, you're full of life, and you have your best friend in all the world by your side.

What could possibly go wrong? 


Indeed, what could? Pompidou Posse, is set in the late 80s and has been described as 'loosely autobiographical'. As Mandy J Watson writes in her review of the SA edition:

'What makes the book even more fascinating is that it is only a somewhat fictonalised tale as much of the story is a (from what I've heard often lighter) retelling of the experiences Lotz and a friend shared as homeless people in Paris in the 80s, after they fled England.'

'I was terrified. My first novel, POMPIDOU POSSE, was published in South Africa the first time around (Hodder is kindly re-releasing it this year). Far from being a global bestseller, it sold about twelve copies and gave me a taste of what it's like to fail as a writer - in this game, when you often need a thick skin, this wasn't necessarily a bad thing!'

Blame it on the wonderful Golden Baobab Prizes, but in the last couple of years I've gotten more and more interested in children's literature. So much so that for a while now, I've been scouring the internet and bookshops (physical and online) learning about the wonderful world of children's literature. 

Initially, this post was going to be a compilation of the many wonderful books I was discovering, such as Margeurite Abouet and Mathieu Sapin's Akissi, but then in my search I came across a number of awesome sites that were doing a much better job than I ever could. Instead I decided to showcase some of them. So if you're curious about African children's literature and want to find out more - here are a few websites and publishers to get you going. 

Mmofra Foundation


Based in Ghana and founded by Ghanaian writer, Efua Sutherland, Mmofra Foundation is "dedicated to enriching the cultural and intellectual lives of all children in Ghana." If you haven't already, check out their Pinterest page - an awesome exploration of African children's literature (amongst many other wonderful things). There are booklists for kids, booklists for Young Adults, Picture Book Art and even Green Books. 



Nal'ibali
Another cool website is Nal'ibali. isiXhosa for "here's the story", Nal'ibali is "a national reading-for-enjoyment campaign to spark children's potential through storytelling and reading." Their bookshelf section features children's books they enjoy and have also shared with children through their reading clubs and newspaper supplement. They have books of the month, featured books and recommended reads. 



PUKU.co.za
Another southern African website, PUKU is a weekly online literary newspaper focused specifically on children's literature, education and literacy in southern Africa. PUKU aims to "build up a transparent, regularly updated and accurate database of reviews of recreational and educational books and resources for African parents, teachers and librarians in all South African official languages."



Kio Global
Founded by Chimaechi Ochei, after a trip to Lagos in 2008 where she visited a bookshop which didn't have books with African children in them, Kio Global aim is to provide "schools, governments, charities and families with educational resources that reflect cultures and languages globally." I love that this website sources books in different languages including Arabic, Hausa, Shona and Twi.
A number of publisher's on the continent also publish children's books including Kenyan Storyhippo books, Nigerian Cassava Republic, Tanzanian Mkuki Na Nyota, South African Jacana Media, as well as online bookstores, such as African Books Collective.

Next up in the 'Meet' Series - my chance to interview anyone I would love to meet that is involved in African literature - is Xanelé Puren. A look at Xanelé's bio reveals what a dynamic young woman she is - illustrator, named one of the Mail & Guardian's 200 Young South Africans in 2012, co-founder of the social enterprise See-Saw-Do (which combines the two things she loves: illustration and the wellbeing of children in South Africa) and winner of the inaugural Golden Baobab Prize for African Illustrators. 

I am just going to come out and say that I am completely inspired by Xanelé Puren's creative activism - and I am very honoured that she took the time to answer my many questions for the series. Enjoy!!!


About you

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself (where you’re from, what you do, any fun details)?
I'm a 26-year-old Capetonian. Mother to a very large and fluffy cat named Bob. Wife to Jeremy, who is not only my life partner, but my business partner as well. Together, Jeremy and I co-founded and run a “child centred” design company called See-Saw-Do.

Could you describe your journey to becoming an artist?
I've always considered myself to be a “creative being”. My mother studied fine arts, so I guess it runs in the family. Illustration in children's books really made me aspire to want to be in the creative industry. I ended up studying Visual Communication Design at Stellenbosch University where I discovered that I have a great passion for illustration.

Do you remember the first illustration you ever drew?
I can't recall the very first picture I drew. I do however recall that I've always loved drawing. At 6 years of age, on my first day at pre-primary, I was extremely excited over my first drawing. I was busy drawing a horse and my picture covered the entire page. The teacher tapped me on the shoulder and told me not to cover the page and suggested that I use less colours, because it was taking too much time. I was quite set aback by that comment and that's probably why I have a vivid memory of what that particular drawing looked like.

What do you do when you are not illustrating?
See-Saw-Do, our design studio, requires a lot more from me than just illustration. We have to manage projects, do site visits and a whole bunch of other things required of us to make the business run smoothly and have a maximum impact on the children and communities we work in.

Fortunately, when you live in Cape Town there is always so much happening in the city (first thursdays, rooftop movie screenings, gallery openings etc). I love climbing Lion's Head, all the various hiking trails along Table Mountain. Cape Town has loads of food markets, my personal is the Oranjezicht City Farm Market. We're almost at that market every Saturday morning.

On illustrating

How did you become interested in illustrating, and particularly illustrating literature for children?
Growing up, my mother used to expose us to many many illustrated story books. These books definitely cultivated an appreciation for illustration and stories. As mentioned in a previous answer, I discovered my true passion for illustration whilst at University. Our final year brief was "design to make a difference" and I decided to focus on designing for children. During that year I designed two books and we beautified 3 Early Childhood Development Centres with relevant educational murals.

Currently, I don't focus solely on illustrating children's literature. The illustrations I currently produce are done for See-Saw-Do with the goal to enhance and beautify child environments. I do draw in my free-time as well and apart from designing three of my own books I’ve also illustrated a book for the Joy Bracelet initiative.

What do you love the most about being an illustrator (and illustrating for children)?
I love investing time and energy into beautifying spaces where children live, learn and play - whether it's through classroom upgrades, and makeovers, illustrations or through an illustrated mural. Being able to create something that will have a positive impact on a child, their play environment, their learning environment or their creativity is extremely rewarding.

Your artwork has been described as having a “‘child-like’ playfulness”, where do you get your ideas for your drawings from?
Sometimes I have to create illustrations according to a brief. In other cases, I have to come up with themes, design solutions. More often than not, the ideas flow onto paper quite effortlessly. I know that my past, present, the crazy information age that we live in obviously has an impact on the creative mind which in turn has an impact on one's work.

Beyond illustrating for children’s literature, you are the co-founder of the social enterprise See-Saw-Do, could you tell us the story behind it?
See-Saw-Do was born out of my final year studying Visual Communication Design at Stellenbosch University. Our brief was “design to make a difference” and I decided to focus my energy and creativity on designing for children. I ended up seeing a great need for beautification at local Early childhood development [ECD] centres as well as a need for educational books. During 2010 I designed 3 English/Xhosa work/image picture books and three relevant themed murals. I entered this idea for the Sappi Ideas that Matter competition and won a grant that funded printing 2000 of my books + running costs to re-paint more ECD centres. This grant gave me the confidence to pursue See-Saw-Do post graduation. My husband (who played a big role in the entire process up to this point) also decided to devote 100% of his time to make this initiative a success and we’ve been running for 4 years.

See-Saw-Do has developed into a company that re-imagines and designs  beautiful, functional and relevant child environments. Our scope of work includes mural makeovers, spatial upgrades, and interior classroom makeovers.

This year, we will also start working on designing and installing exterior play spaces. We fund our projects by partnering up with corporate companies, NGO’s and our local government. We’re dreaming big and super amped about what the future holds for See-Saw-Do, the creative possibilities and the impact it can have on children's lives.

On Children’s Literature and Golden Baobab

Do you remember which children’s books were your favourite back when you were a young reader and why?
I still have quite a few books from my childhood library! I love a tale from Liberia called "The Vingananee and the tree toad", a Russian folk tale "Varenka", "Where the Wild things are" by Maurice Sendak, "Moomin" by Tove Jansson to name but a few. All of these books have beautiful illustrations and captivating stories.

How did you hear about the Golden Baobab Prize for Illustrators?
I received a email that was sent out by the Golden Baobab to illustrators and writers who might be interested in participating.

Could you tell us about the piece you submitted and the inspiration behind it?
We had a very strict brief we had to use to base our illustrations on. Brief number one was "A boy and his little brother are lost in a big city market. The older boy is pulling his brother who is distracted by a chicken."  Brief number two: "Jama only had 15 minutes to choose books before the library closed. He could see, out of the corner of his eye, the librarian's foot tapping nearby. But Jama needed to take books his father would believe he was interested in."

What was your reaction to winning the inaugural prize?
I was super surprised, super stoked and extremely happy! I definitely threw a few air punches!

What are you reading right now?
“I am Malala: The girl who stood up for education and was shot by the Taliban” by Malala Yousafzai and “The minor adjustment beauty salon: The Nr1 ladies detective agency” by Alexander Mccall Smith, as well as “Parenting beyond pink and blue” by Christina Spears Brown.

As an illustrator, have you ever judged a book by its cover? If so, what are some of your favourite book covers?
I often fall into the trap where I don’t have time to properly browse through books in a bookstore and I end up pick a book with the most aesthetically pleasing cover. I’ve had my fair share of success and failure using this method! A charming book I came across using this method was “In the sea there are crocodiles” by Fabio Geda. One of my personal favourite covers is an illustrated cover by Carson Ellis for a book called “Wildwood”.

What’s next?
See-Saw-Do will be moving into a new studio space later this month. I hope to make the space cat friendly to accommodate our extremely social and affectionate cat. We have a few exciting projects lined up and if all goes according to plan, we’ll be expanding our services to include designing and installing multi-sensory play spaces. This will add a new dimension to our work and I’m very excited to see where it will lead us! One of our main beneficiaries, Eldene Primary, will hopefully be the first space to benefit from a new play area.

About me

Founded in 2011, bookshy represents two things: the young me who was so shy I escaped through books, and the older me whose shelf is always one book shy of being full.

bookshy is a space where I celebrate, promote and recognise contemporary African literature - although sometimes I go back in time to commemorate the greats. It is about the books I love, the books I have read and the books that I am dying to read.
