Amazing Female African Writers

by - 23:39

There was a time when African female writers were discriminated against. I remember reading once that a few publishers rejected Tsitsi Dangarembga’s Nervous Conditions because she portrayed the lives of black women  too negatively; and Buchi Emecheta was said to have been too bold in her portrayal of women in her novels. Things are obviously changing now because there are so many amazing female writers out there - of the 12 shortlisted Commonwealth’s regional Best Book and Best First Book awards in 2011, 9 were African women.
